Vashon’s Chautauqua Elementary School Fourth Grade birding program was recognized by Cornell University’s Ornithology Department “Celebrate Urban Birds”. They added three pages to their website about the program. Classroom teacher Jan Smith developed a 6 to 8 week birding curriculum for her students which involves science, communication, and art. Many people and organizations are also part of the project; Vashon-Maury Island Audubon Society, Partners In Education and Vashon Artist in the Schools. Artist Rose Belknap has worked with Jan’s students for the pasted three years teaching the students how to draw 28 different birds. Each student has chosen to paint one of these 28 birds for their final project. This program is a rich and rewarding experience for the students, opening their eyes to the natural world in which they live.
